Manchester United is reportedly planning to use Mason Greenwood as part of a trade to acquire Benfica’s promising wonderkid, Joao Neves, who is valued at £100 million. This move is seen as a potential partnership with Kobbie Mainoo for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Although Manchester United has not completed any acquisitions yet, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has specific plans for the team’s summer transfers.
Among these plans is the inclusion of Joao Neves, a 19-year-old defensive midfielder from Portugal. Neves has shown remarkable maturity and skill on the field, earning him a spot in the Euro 2024 squad.
Benfica is keen to retain Neves for at least another season but is reportedly open to letting him go this summer for a price of up to £100 million. Ratcliffe has previously stated that United will not be “held to ransom” during the transfer window, making the acquisition of Neves seem like a long shot.
However, Manchester United might have an unexpected advantage. Benfica is one of six clubs interested in signing Mason Greenwood this summer.
Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, is valued by United at £40 million and is expected to be sold. By including Greenwood in the deal, United could potentially lower the asking price for Neves to £60 million, making the transfer more feasible.
This strategy aligns with Ineos’ search for bargains during the transfer window and could lead to securing a talented midfielder with a promising future at a reasonable price.
