Ilkay Gundogan is set to return to the Etihad Stadium just one year after leaving. According to The Athletic, the 33-year-old will sign a one-year contract with Manchester City, with an option for an additional 12 months. In order to facilitate the move, the former Germany international is reportedly willing to forgo the two years of income he would have earned at Barcelona.
Gundogan had an impressive season at Barcelona, making over 50 appearances across all competitions and earning a spot in the La Liga Team of the Season. However, a change in management at Camp Nou has led to a new vision for the club, and the experienced midfielder has been informed that he is not part of new head coach Hansi Flick’s plans. Reports suggest that Gundogan discussed his return with Pep Guardiola, who approved the move.
Gundogan originally joined Manchester City in 2016 when Guardiola was appointed as manager. During his initial seven-year stint with the club, he made 188 appearances and achieved significant success, winning five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League trophy. His return to City highlights his strong connection with the club and Guardiola’s trust in his abilities.
Despite their quiet summer in the transfer market, with Gundogan set to join Brazilian international Savinho as the only senior additions, Manchester City’s performance remains strong.
