Real Madrid are reportedly preparing a bold move to sign Rodri from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, amid stalled contract negotiations between the Spanish midfielder and the Premier League champions. Despite his contract running until 2027, the reigning European champions are keen to pursue Rodri, whom they have long admired for his exceptional performances as one of Europe’s top defensive midfielders since joining City in 2019.
Real Madrid sees Rodri as the ideal long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, who retired after Germany’s exit from Euro 2024. Kroos was a pivotal figure in Madrid’s midfield for nearly a decade, and the club is eager to find a successor who can anchor the team for years to come. Reports from AS indicate that Rodri has become a priority target for Los Blancos, with the club laying the groundwork for a potential transfer next summer.
In addition to their interest in Rodri, Real Madrid is also confident about finalizing a deal for Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies within the next year.
However, securing Rodri’s signature may prove more challenging, as Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are determined to retain one of their most crucial players.
Negotiations between Rodri and City over a new contract have reportedly stalled, leading to speculation about his future at the Etihad. The report suggests that if Rodri were to leave Manchester, Real Madrid would be his preferred destination.
A return to Madrid holds personal significance for the Spaniard, who previously spent a year at Atletico Madrid before joining City. Under Guardiola’s guidance, Rodri has developed into an elite midfielder, playing a key role in City’s domestic and European successes.
Rodri’s outstanding performances during the 2023/24 season, both for club and country, have earned him a nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. His contributions were vital in helping City secure another Premier League title and win the Champions League, as well as in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. Guardiola praised Rodri’s achievements, acknowledging his consistent excellence but noting that other players also had strong seasons.
While the prospect of joining Real Madrid might appeal to Rodri, it remains uncertain whether the club can convince both him and Manchester City to agree to a move next summer. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Real Madrid is determined to bring the Spanish star back to his homeland.
