Paul Pogba’s football career has taken several tumultuous turns in recent years, with a doping violation being the latest blow. The French midfielder, who is 31 years old, faced a potential end to his career after testing positive for a banned substance in 2023, leading to a four-year suspension.
However, after a successful appeal, his suspension was reduced to 18 months, providing a glimmer of hope for his return to football. Despite this reduction, his future with Juventus, the club he rejoined in 2022, is uncertain, and it appears that his time there may be coming to an end.
Pogba’s second stint at Juventus did not meet the expectations of either the player or the club. After returning to the club in July 2022, hopes were high that he would restore his past glory. Unfortunately, Pogba’s first season back was riddled with injuries, restricting him to only 12 appearances.
Matters worsened when he tested positive for DHEA, a prohibited substance. While Pogba maintained that he unknowingly consumed the substance, the four-year ban that followed cast a shadow over his career.
With his suspension now reduced, Pogba will be eligible to resume training in January 2025 and could return to playing competitively by March. However, Juventus is expected to part ways with him before then.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that the club is likely to terminate Pogba’s contract, which was initially set to run until 2026. Juventus CEO Maurizio Scanavino confirmed that discussions between the club and Pogba’s representatives are ongoing, with an agreement expected soon.
Despite his uncertain future at Juventus, Pogba could still continue his career elsewhere, possibly at Marseille. There have been reports linking him to the French club, where his former Manchester United teammate Mason Greenwood currently plays.
If this move materializes, it would be a reunion of two players seeking redemption. Malick Traore of NCI has suggested that negotiations between Pogba and Marseille are in advanced stages, and a transfer may happen in the upcoming winter window.
Pogba’s doping case continues to cloud his legacy, but his reduced suspension has given him a chance to return. The next few months will determine if he can regain his form and find a club willing to take a chance on him amidst the controversy.
