Sporting Club forward Viktor Gyökeres has finally addressed Arsenal defender Gabrielâs decision to mimic his signature celebration during a recent match.
Gyökeres, 26, has been a standout player in Europe this season, netting an impressive 24 goals in just 20 games. However, the Swedish striker couldnât add to his tally on Tuesday as Arsenal secured a commanding 5-1 win in Lisbon.
Gabriel scored Arsenalâs third goal during first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on Declan Riceâs precise corner with a perfectly executed run. After finding the back of the net, the Brazilian defender replicated Gyökeresâ trademark celebration, interlocking his hands in front of his face. Gyökeres later responded humorously, saying Gabriel was welcome to âstealâ the celebration if he couldnât invent one himself.
Reports suggest the celebration was a playful nod to Pedro Goncalves, who mimicked Granit Xhakaâs celebration when Sporting eliminated Arsenal in the Europa League back in March 2023.
Despite Sportingâs defeat, Gyökeres remains a sought-after talent, with clubs like Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona reportedly keeping a close eye on him during the game.
Arsenalâs victory propelled them to seventh in the Champions League group stage standings. However, concerns arose over Gabrielâs fitness after manager Mikel Arteta revealed the defender had experienced some discomfort. While the exact issue remains unclear, Arteta expressed satisfaction with his teamâs performance, commending their efficiency and progress on the European stage.
