UEFA has introduced significant changes to its club competitions this season, and Arsenal, following a second straight second-place finish in the Premier League, are set to compete once again at Europe’s highest level.
The Gunners returned to the Champions League last season after a six-year absence. Placed in a group that felt more like a Europa League lineup, Mikel Arteta’s side navigated it with ease, finishing top. In the round of 16, they edged out Porto on penalties in a tense encounter but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Bayern Munich.
A narrow defeat in Bavaria, sealed by Joshua Kimmich’s decisive header, ended their campaign. The experience, however, should be invaluable as the team tackles new challenges this season.
UEFA’s new “Swiss model” has replaced the traditional group stage, introducing a “league phase” with more matches and higher stakes.
Arsenal’s eight opponents in this phase have been confirmed, and the league format extends beyond the usual December conclusion, running into late January. Arteta faces the daunting task of managing his squad across a demanding schedule.
Arsenal began their campaign on 19 September with a goalless draw away at Europa League champions Atalanta, thanks to a stellar display from goalkeeper David Raya.
Their first victory came in Matchday 2, a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates. They followed it up with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk, ensuring a place in the top eight ahead of tougher fixtures.
Next, Arsenal traveled to the iconic San Siro on 6 November to face Inter Milan, defending Serie A champions. Matches in Milan have produced memorable moments for the Gunners, offering the current squad a chance to add to their European legacy.
Despite tackling some of their toughest challenges early, Arsenal must remain focused. A trip to Sporting CP on 26 November and a home clash with Monaco on 11 December still pose significant threats.
With their final two matches—hosting Dinamo Zagreb and visiting Girona’s compact Estadi Montilivi—Arsenal have an opportunity to finish the league phase strongly. Points from these fixtures could be crucial, ensuring their progression into the knockout stages and keeping hopes alive for a deeper run in the competition.
This extended format not only tests the squad’s endurance but also provides the platform to solidify their status among Europe’s elite.
