Arsenal Transfer Update: Viktor Gyokeres and £50m Deal
Arsenal is gearing up for a busy January transfer window, aiming to strengthen their squad while offloading underperforming players. This activity comes as the Gunners regained their Premier League momentum with an impressive 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last Saturday.
Gabriel Jesus led the charge with a brace, supported by goals from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice. This win has positioned Arsenal just three points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand.
To maintain their title aspirations, Arsenal is expected to make significant moves in the transfer market, with several players already linked to the Emirates. Among them is Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting CP’s prolific striker, who has scored an astounding 27 goals in 25 matches this season.
According to Football Transfers, manager Mikel Arteta is eager to secure a striker, and Arsenal is reportedly in contact with Gyokeres. Sporting has placed a €65 million (£54 million) valuation on the 26-year-old.
Another striker on Arsenal’s radar is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. The club attempted to sign him last summer, but the player chose to extend his stay in Leipzig. Arteta remains interested in Sesko as a potential reinforcement.
In addition to bolstering their attack, Arsenal is looking to enhance their midfield options. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that the club has reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to sign Alberto Moleiro from Las Palmas for €60 million (£50 million), which matches his release clause. Moleiro, who has scored four goals in 17 appearances this season, is viewed as a creative playmaker similar to Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. An official announcement regarding his transfer is anticipated in the coming months.
Former Arsenal player Jermaine Pennant has urged the club to prioritize signing a high-performing striker in January. Speaking to Casino Apps, Pennant highlighted the need for a reliable goalscorer, stating, “To contend for the league, Arsenal must have a striker capable of scoring 20-25 goals per season. Currently, they lack that firepower.” He also emphasized the team’s overreliance on Bukayo Saka for goals, noting Gabriel Martinelli’s struggles with converting chances.
As the January window approaches, Arsenal’s moves in the market will be crucial in their quest for Premier League glory.
