Barcelona have initiated efforts in the transfer market to find a suitable replacement for Robert Lewandowski, anticipating his possible departure at the end of the season.
Despite Lewandowski’s impressive form and goal-scoring contributions, his future at the club remains uncertain due to financial concerns.
His hefty salary has prompted Barcelona’s management, including President Joan Laporta and Sporting Director Deco, to push for a significant pay cut.
If Lewandowski declines the proposed salary reduction, his contract, set to expire on June 30, may see him leave Camp Nou as a free agent. This would mark the end of his three-year stint with Barcelona following his transfer from Bayern Munich.
While former Germany coach Hansi Flick still believes in Lewandowski’s ability to perform at a top level for several more seasons, he recognizes that financial constraints could force the striker’s exit.
According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Barcelona has already started scouting potential replacements. The club is searching for a prolific goal-scorer of Lewandowski’s caliber, considering his past accolade as “The Best” FIFA Men’s Player in 2020.
Prominent names such as Erling Braut Haaland, Alexander Isak, and Victor Gyökeres have emerged as possible targets. However, securing these high-profile players would require substantial financial investment, which Barcelona might struggle to manage given their current budgetary limits.
Consequently, the Catalan giants have turned their attention to more affordable alternatives. One promising candidate is Canadian forward Jonathan David, currently playing for Lille in France.
David has been on the radar of several elite European clubs and appears poised to leave Lille soon, as he has shown little interest in extending his contract. His current deal is set to expire in the summer transfer window, making him a viable option on a free transfer.
David’s performances this season have been remarkable, with eight goals and two assists so far. His consistency and goal-scoring prowess have impressed both Deco and Flick, making him a strong contender to fill Lewandowski’s shoes should the Polish striker depart.
Barcelona’s pursuit of David reflects their commitment to securing a reliable forward while maintaining financial stability, ensuring competitiveness in the post-Lewandowski era.
