Barcelona players have faced significant criticism recently due to a string of disappointing performances. While the harshness of the criticism may seem excessive, it is warranted given the team’s struggles on the pitch. These poor displays have caused Barcelona to lose critical points in La Liga, allowing rivals Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid to close in on the league standings.
The team has managed only five points out of a possible 18 in the last six rounds, winning just one game during this period. This concerning trend has put pressure on coach Hansi Flick to devise a quick solution.
One player who has been under intense scrutiny is Alejandro Balde. Once a rising star and a key figure in Barcelona’s lineup, Balde’s performances have declined sharply. Two seasons ago, he emerged as an undisputed starter under Xavi Hernández, surpassing experienced players like Marcos Alonso and Jordi Alba.
His impressive form made him an essential part of the team’s project, earning him recognition as one of the best young full-backs in Europe.
However, Balde’s fortunes changed last season when he suffered a significant drop in form. He eventually lost his place in the starting lineup before sustaining a serious injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season and the European Championship.
Despite Flick’s confidence in restoring Balde’s form—much like he did with Raphinha and Jules Koundé—his performances have remained inconsistent. Defensive lapses and a diminished attacking presence have plagued his game, compounded by ongoing physical issues.
Balde’s decline has turned him from a promising star into one of Barcelona’s most disappointing players.
His current role as a starter seems more a result of the lack of competition than a reflection of his abilities. Gerard Martin has been unable to provide an adequate replacement, leaving the team vulnerable on the left flank.
Given these struggles, Barcelona may consider offloading Balde if a lucrative offer arises. The club is increasingly expected to explore the transfer market for a new left-back to strengthen the squad.
While Balde’s potential remains undeniable, his future at the club appears uncertain, with no scenario being ruled out as Barcelona looks for solutions to its defensive woes.
