Arsenal have seemingly gained momentum in their efforts to sign Nico Williams ahead of the January transfer window. The Athletic Bilbao winger has garnered attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Arsenal, due to his outstanding performances for Spain during Euro 2024.
Despite widespread interest, Williams chose to remain at Bilbao during the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has been linked with clubs such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham. However, Arsenal reportedly identified him as Mikel Arteta’s priority attacking target for the 2024/25 season.
Financial restrictions related to profit and sustainability rules ultimately prevented the Gunners from completing the deal. Instead, Arsenal opted for a temporary solution, signing Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Although Williams stayed at Bilbao, Arsenal’s interest has not waned. The winger has continued to impress, contributing to seven goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this season.
While his form hasn’t quite matched his Euro 2024 heroics, moments like his assist in Bilbao’s 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad showcased his speed and ability to deliver decisive passes.
Williams has expressed his loyalty to Bilbao, stating in October, “I’m not thinking about my future now. I’m so happy to be at Athletic… Bilbao is my home, and I want to enjoy it here.” However, reports suggest his stance on a potential move may be shifting.
According to The Athletic, Williams is now more receptive to a Premier League transfer, though he would prefer not to leave during the January window.
This development bodes well for Arsenal’s pursuit of the winger, with a potential summer transfer seeming increasingly likely.
Williams’ future was reportedly a key topic during a recent meeting between Mikel Arteta and the Kroenke family in the United States, solidifying his position as one of Arsenal’s top transfer priorities for the upcoming window.
