Mikel Arteta has disclosed that Arsenal is exploring internal solutions to handle Bukayo Saka’s absence while remaining open to potential signings in the January transfer window if a standout opportunity arises.
Speaking on Monday, Arteta confirmed Saka would be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury. He also revealed that the team would be without winger Raheem Sterling, who is sidelined with a knee issue.
Despite these setbacks, Arteta emphasized his commitment to maximizing the current squad’s potential.
He highlighted Arsenal’s depth, suggesting various in-house options are available, while acknowledging the club’s readiness to act in the market if a remarkable chance emerges. “We have many, many options within the squad,” Arteta stated. “But if something unbelievable becomes available and the club is willing, we’ll have to consider it.”
Arsenal has a strong history of making impactful January signings, such as Jorginho and Leandro Trossard in 2023 and Martin Odegaard on loan in 2021. This track record positions the club well to make calculated decisions if the need arises during the upcoming transfer window.
Arteta also touched on the recent departure of sporting director Edu, who was instrumental in building the current squad. With Jason Ayto stepping in as interim sporting director, Arteta expressed confidence in the club’s preparedness to respond decisively in January. “The preparation is done, and we are ready if something happens,” he said, adding that the simultaneous loss of Saka and Sterling was unexpected but would be managed. “We anticipated challenges, maybe in defense, but we are prepared to adapt.”
To address Saka’s absence, Arteta is considering various tactical adjustments. In Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Gabriel Martinelli played on the right wing.
Arteta is also evaluating alternatives, including Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard. He remains optimistic about finding innovative solutions, stating, “I have some ideas, but I want to discuss them with the players. This situation will push us to evolve and be different.”
Arteta underlined Arsenal’s resilience, recalling how the team had previously overcome injuries to key players like Martin Odegaard and several defenders. He concluded with a positive outlook: “We will keep finding ways, and we’ll tackle this challenge with energy and determination.”
