Arsenal is ramping up their efforts to secure attacking reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window, with Atalanta’s prolific striker Mateo Retegui emerging as a key target. Alexander Isak, who was once considered a potential signing, has solidified his place at Newcastle United, becoming indispensable under Eddie Howe, highlighted by his recent hat-trick against Ipswich Town.
Similarly, Viktor Gyokeres is no longer an option, as the Swedish striker has expressed a preference for joining Manchester United to reunite with manager Ruben Amorim.
This has prompted Arsenal to focus on 25-year-old Retegui, who has been a standout performer for Atalanta this season.
Leading the Serie A scoring charts with 12 goals and adding two more in the Champions League, Retegui’s impressive form has caught the attention of Arsenal scouts, particularly during his two-goal display in Atalanta’s 6-1 win over Young Boys in November.
Retegui’s rise to prominence has been remarkable. Beginning his career in Argentina with stints at Boca Juniors and River Plate, he transitioned to European football with Genoa in 2023 before joining Atalanta last summer. His quick adaptation to Serie A has established him as one of Europe’s most promising talents.
While Arsenal’s current frontline, including a rejuvenated Kai Havertz and in-form Gabriel Jesus, has shown promise, manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add depth and versatility.
Retegui’s clinical finishing, coupled with his ability to link play and create chances, makes him an ideal candidate to elevate Arsenal’s attack. Despite a thigh injury, his track record suggests he could make an immediate impact once fit.
Arteta has emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the January window, underlining the club’s intent to strengthen the squad. With Arsenal currently third in the league and six points behind leaders Liverpool, the addition of Retegui could be pivotal in maintaining their title challenge.
Although challenges like Barcelona’s interest in Isak and Gyokeres’ preference for Manchester United remain, Arsenal’s pursuit of Retegui signals their ambition to compete at the highest level.
