Spanish football legend Andrés Iniesta shared his thoughts on Barcelona’s performance under coach Hansi Flick after their dramatic 4-4 draw against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. Speaking on Radio Catalunya, Iniesta analyzed key tactical aspects of the match and raised concerns about some of Flick’s decisions.
One of the main topics Iniesta addressed was the limited role of young midfielder Marc Casado. He pointed out that despite Casado’s strong performance in his only recent start against Las Palmas, he had been overlooked for selection in crucial matches.
Iniesta believed that Casado would have been a valuable asset in the second half against Atletico Madrid, given the immense pressure Barcelona faced. He argued that Casado’s defensive abilities and composure in midfield could have helped stabilize the team, yet Flick chose to keep Frenkie de Jong on the field despite his underwhelming display.
Iniesta also questioned the decision to substitute Pedri, who had been one of Barcelona’s most effective attacking players in the match. He noted that Pedri’s creativity and boldness in the final third were instrumental in Barcelona’s attacking moves, and his removal weakened the team’s offensive threat.
On the other hand, he criticized the continued inclusion of Gavi in the starting lineup, arguing that the young midfielder’s current form did not align with the level Barcelona needed to compete at. Iniesta acknowledged Gavi’s talent but warned that forcing him into the lineup at this stage could have negative consequences for both the player and the team’s overall performance.
Another key issue Iniesta highlighted was Barcelona’s failure to manage crucial moments in the match, particularly in the final minutes. He observed that the team suffered from defensive disorganization, allowing Atletico Madrid to capitalize on open spaces.
According to Iniesta, had Barcelona maintained better defensive discipline instead of rushing forward recklessly, they could have secured a better result.
The former Barcelona captain did not shy away from criticizing Flick’s tactical approach, calling for adjustments to the team’s formation. He emphasized that given the inconsistent performances of certain players, Flick should make bolder choices in team selection.
Iniesta urged the coach to give more opportunities to players like Casado, who had proven their potential, rather than sticking to the same lineup despite fluctuating results. Ultimately, he stressed the need for a more balanced approach if Barcelona hopes to compete effectively in the remainder of the season.
