Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Arsenal missed an opportunity by not integrating Nwaneri into the squad earlier.
He pointed out that during Martin Odegaard’s two-month absence due to an ankle injury, the teenager could have played a more significant role.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand highlighted the impact Nwaneri has had on the team, stating that the youngster has been “cooking defenders” and unsettling opposition teams. He suggested that had Nwaneri been introduced sooner, Arsenal might have secured additional points.
Ferdinand further emphasized that Arsenal struggled creatively when Odegaard was unavailable, and Nwaneri’s presence could have provided the spark they needed.
The team dropped crucial points during that period, and he believes giving the youngster more opportunities would have been beneficial.
The teenager’s performances have drawn admiration beyond Ferdinand. Joe Cole has even likened him to Lionel Messi, while Alan Shearer sees him as a ‘potential superstar.’ Nwaneri has steadily worked his way into the team, scoring seven goals in 24 appearances this season.
With key players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli still sidelined due to injury, he now seems poised to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup.
Ferdinand warned that Arsenal’s delay in utilizing Nwaneri could prove costly in their title challenge, as they continue to trail Liverpool.
With only a few games remaining in the season, every point is vital, and Arsenal will need the young midfielder to maintain his impressive form if they hope to end their 21-year wait for a Premier League title.
