The La Liga match between Barcelona and Osasuna, originally set to take place at Montjuïc Stadium a few days ago, was postponed, making it necessary to reschedule.
Due to delays in determining Barcelona’s Champions League fate, the Professional Competitions Committee took several days before settling on a new date. Eventually, the match was scheduled for Thursday, March 27.
This rescheduled fixture falls right after the international break, which presents a significant challenge for Barcelona. Two key players, Rafinha and Ronald Araujo, will likely be unavailable as they will have just played for their respective national teams, Argentina and Bolivia, the day before. Their absence weakens Barcelona’s squad, making the decision to hold the match at this time unfavorable for the club.
It appears that neither La Liga nor the Spanish Football Federation took Barcelona’s situation into account when selecting the new date. Many believe the match could have been scheduled for May 20 or 21, between rounds 37 and 38, which would have been a more logical choice as it would not clash with international fixtures. Despite this, the authorities opted for the March 27 date, leaving Barcelona at a disadvantage.
Spanish newspaper El Nacional reported that Barcelona was already informed of this decision last Sunday, even before it was officially announced. The club was not pleased with the decision, believing that other scheduling options should have been explored.
The congested calendar undoubtedly limits flexibility, but Barcelona feels that their concerns, as one of the main parties affected, were not adequately considered during the scheduling process.
Barcelona still has the option to challenge this decision by appealing to the Second Division Court. With the match date fast approaching, an official ruling on the matter is expected soon. In the meantime, if March 27 remains the confirmed date, the club will have to adjust its training schedules and make the necessary preparations to compete without some of its key players.
