As FC Barcelona embarks on a new chapter under recently appointed manager Hansi Flick, preparations are already underway for the future beyond Robert Lewandowski. Despite the Polish striker’s outstanding form this season—netting 23 goals in just 24 appearances—his age (36) and contract circumstances have encouraged the club to start planning ahead.
Lewandowski’s current agreement extends to 2026, with a possible extension to 2027, depending on match appearances. With that in mind, Barcelona is actively scouting for a long-term replacement, and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as their top candidate.
The 26-year-old Swedish forward has quickly made a name for himself among Europe’s elite strikers. Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, Gyökeres has played a vital role in their success, including helping secure a league title and producing eye-catching performances in the Champions League — most notably a hat-trick against Manchester City. His qualities—sharp finishing, physical presence, and strong link-up play—align well with Barcelona’s attacking philosophy.
Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has publicly praised Gyökeres, seeing him as a natural successor to Lewandowski. His youth and proven scoring ability position him as a valuable long-term solution for the Catalan club.
Rather than rushing into a deal, Barcelona is believed to be planning a calculated approach for summer 2025. The idea is to sign Gyökeres for approximately €70 million and immediately loan him back to Sporting for a season, allowing Lewandowski to remain the focal point for the 2025/26 campaign while easing the transition.
However, much depends on Lewandowski’s form and choices. The veteran striker has expressed his intention to compete at the highest level until 39, and with 17 goals in 15 games under Flick, he appears capable. A clause in his deal ensures an automatic extension if he features in at least 55% of matches this season, a target he is currently on course to achieve.
Financial constraints complicate Barcelona’s pursuit. While Gyökeres carries a €100 million release clause, Sporting might settle for around €60–70 million.
Barcelona’s improving financial situation, alongside the restored 1:1 salary cap rule, could strengthen their position by 2025. Additionally, offering Vitor Roque in a swap deal could reduce costs, given Sporting’s prior interest in him.
Competition is fierce, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Atlético Madrid all keen. While Gyökeres favors Barcelona, other clubs might promise faster starting roles. Though Gyökeres is Barça’s top choice, alternatives like Alexander Isak, Jonathan David, and others remain under consideration.
For now, Lewandowski remains central to Flick’s setup, while fans eagerly follow the transfer saga.
