Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman recently shared a surprising perspective on the Catalan club’s chances in the UEFA Champions League, stating that they are not the leading contenders for the title this season.
His comments came in the wake of Barcelona’s impressive 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals — a result that puts them on the brink of qualification for the semi-finals. Despite the dominant performance, Koeman downplayed Barcelona’s status as favorites.
In remarks reported by Mundo Deportivo, Koeman said, “Barcelona is not the biggest favorite to win the Champions League. There are other teams on the same level, and my pick for the title is Arsenal.” This statement took many by surprise, especially considering the team’s recent form.
Koeman also criticized the strength of their quarter-final opponents, saying, “I don’t think Borussia Dortmund are among the giants of European football at the moment. They’re currently eighth in the Bundesliga and only managed to create five chances against Barcelona.” His comments suggest that the victory may not be as significant a marker of Barcelona’s superiority as it first appears.
Despite this, Koeman praised the team’s overall performance and management under coach Hansi Flick. “Flick is handling the team in the best way possible,” he stated. “There’s a very positive atmosphere around the squad, and I believe they have a real chance to win important trophies this season.”
He also highlighted how much the team has evolved over the past year or two. “You can’t compare this team with the one from a year or two ago. The players are more experienced now,” he said. “One thing that stands out is how everyone contributes defensively. You can’t defend with just eight players — it takes all eleven.”
Koeman ended his remarks on a sentimental note, expressing his deep connection to the club. “I enjoyed watching Barcelona play. No matter what, this club is still my home,” he concluded.
Koeman’s words offer both encouragement and realism. While he admires the team’s growth and potential, he believes that other European sides — especially Arsenal — may have the edge in this season’s Champions League campaign.
