Arsenal is reportedly closing in on a verbal agreement to sign a promising young centre-back as they continue preparations for the upcoming season. With reports suggesting that Dean Huijsen is likely to complete a move to Real Madrid, the Gunners are eager to reinforce their defensive ranks.
Their attention has now turned to Joel Ordonez, a highly-rated 20-year-old Ecuadorian defender currently playing for Belgian side Club Brugge.
The North London club is believed to have reached an agreement in principle for Ordonez, who has made a name for himself through his commanding physical presence and composure on the field. Arsenal sees him as a long-term prospect who can grow within the team’s system and potentially form a formidable partnership with the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães in the coming years.
While initial reports indicated a transfer fee around £22 million, recent estimates suggest the deal could be closer to £25 million. Despite this, Arsenal considers the valuation a reasonable investment, given Ordonez’s potential and his current role as a regular starter for Club Brugge’s first team.
The deal, however, is not entirely sealed yet. Arsenal still needs to finalize terms with the Belgian club, even though discussions with the player over personal terms are said to be progressing well.
The situation has become slightly more complicated with the emergence of interest from French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have reportedly joined the race for the young defender. This new competition means Arsenal must act swiftly and decisively if they intend to complete the signing ahead of their rivals.
The club’s pursuit of Ordonez highlights their intention to strengthen their backline with a young, developing talent after missing out on Dean Huijsen. While there are still alternative options like Mosquera on their radar, Ordonez appears to be Arsenal’s preferred choice at the moment. Both defenders are seen as potentially more affordable yet less experienced alternatives to Huijsen, allowing Arsenal to manage their budget more efficiently.
By investing sensibly in the centre-back position, Arsenal may also free up resources to bolster other areas of the squad, particularly their attacking options. Although it remains to be seen whether Ordonez will be the final addition to Mikel Arteta’s defense, Arsenal is currently leading the race for his signature and hopes to conclude the deal in the coming days.
