What was meant to be a thrilling UEFA Champions League clash between Barcelona and Inter Milan descended into scandal, raising serious questions about the credibility of officiating in the sport.
In an unusual step, FIFA acknowledged a “major refereeing error,” a rare admission that triggered widespread public outrage and debate across the football world.
At the heart of the controversy was French referee Clément Turpin, whose baffling decisions throughout the match left fans, players, and analysts bewildered. The most heated moment arrived when Barcelona’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, appeared to be fouled inside the penalty box by Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni.

The situation worsened when La Gazzetta dello Sport reported claims from an anonymous insider alleging strange communications between VAR officials and a third party during the game. Although no solid evidence has emerged, even the suggestion of potential match-fixing alarmed fans and pundits alike.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta condemned the officiating, labeling it “daylight robbery,” and called for the match to be reviewed. Social media campaigns like #JusticePourBarca and #VARGate exploded in popularity, reflecting the intensity of public frustration.
As UEFA struggles to manage the crisis, faith in the current VAR system has been severely damaged. Many are now demanding urgent reforms, while conspiracy theories circulate, hinting at deeper problems within football’s governing bodies.
