Arsenal reportedly have the chance to secure the services of Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy for £59 million, amid competition from French giants Paris Saint-Germain, according to a report from Bild (page 11).
With the summer transfer window approaching, the Gunners are expected to strengthen their attacking options, and a top striker appears to be high on their agenda.
Portuguese outlet A Bola recently revealed that Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres. The club is believed to have allocated £59 million for the potential signing of the Swedish international, who has enjoyed a remarkable season in Portugal.
In the midst of this, Bild have disclosed that Arsenal could also activate a £59 million release clause in Guirassy’s contract with Dortmund. The 29-year-old striker has impressed in his debut season, scoring 33 goals and supplying nine assists. Despite strong interest from PSG, only a select group of seven European clubs — including Arsenal — can trigger this buyout clause.
While Dortmund are currently unwilling to negotiate Guirassy’s departure with PSG, financial pressures could mount if the club fails to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season. They are currently one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg and three behind third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga standings.
With Freiburg and Frankfurt set to face off soon, Dortmund have a real opportunity to secure a top-four finish, which could impact any potential outgoing transfers.
Despite having the option to sign Guirassy, it seems unlikely Arsenal will pursue a move. The striker, who joined Dortmund from Stuttgart last summer for £15 million, has undoubtedly delivered with 42 goal contributions in 44 matches. However, at 29 years old, and with his 30th birthday approaching in the 2025/26 campaign, Arsenal might be hesitant to invest such a significant fee.
The North London club have previously shown reluctance to spend heavily on older players, as seen in their unwillingness to meet a £40 million-plus valuation for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, despite his proven record in the Premier League. Arsenal’s recruitment strategy appears focused on securing a younger, yet experienced striker.
This is why Gyokeres has emerged as their top choice. The 26-year-old forward has enjoyed an extraordinary season, scoring 52 goals and registering 13 assists for Sporting CP. Though his time at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League didn’t fully showcase his abilities, a move to Arsenal could offer the perfect platform for redemption.
