According to a report published by the Spanish outlet El Nacional, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has not experienced the season he envisioned, which has led him to begin planning significant adjustments to his squad ahead of the next campaign.
Determined to reestablish Manchester City as a dominant force in European football, Guardiola has identified two of Barcelona’s standout players as primary targets for the upcoming transfer window: Brazilian winger Raphinha and young center-back Pau Cubarsí.
Guardiola’s interest in these players, however, faces a considerable obstacle in Barcelona’s firm stance on keeping them. The Catalan club, under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Hansi Flick, views both Raphinha and Cubarsí as vital components of its future.
Barcelona’s management, led by club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, has already initiated steps to secure their services for the long term.
Raphinha, in particular, has emerged as one of Guardiola’s top priorities following his standout performances this season. Known for his pace, technical ability, and versatility in playing on either flank, the Brazilian has impressed in crucial matches, making him an ideal fit for Guardiola’s attacking style. Nevertheless, Barcelona has no intention of parting ways with him.
Efforts are already underway to extend his contract until 2029, a move designed to fend off any potential suitors. Flick also sees Raphinha as an essential member of his starting eleven, making any potential transfer highly unlikely without a monumental offer.
The second player on Guardiola’s radar is Pau Cubarsí, an 18-year-old defender who has rapidly risen to prominence with his composed displays in Barcelona’s backline.
Despite his youth, Cubarsí has demonstrated maturity, excellent passing accuracy, positional awareness, and composure under pressure — qualities that have earned him a regular place in the starting lineup. These attributes have drawn interest from several top European clubs, with Manchester City among the most eager to acquire his services.
Guardiola envisions Cubarsí as a future leader in City’s defense, yet he recognizes the challenges in securing his signature. Barcelona, much like with young stars Pedri and Gavi, regards Cubarsí as untouchable and an essential part of the club’s long-term project. Additionally, the player himself has expressed his desire to build a lasting career at Camp Nou.
Despite City’s potential to submit substantial offers, Barcelona’s improved financial situation has placed the club in a stronger negotiating position, allowing them to reject bids for their key players. As things stand, the Catalan club remains resolute in its decision not to entertain offers for either Raphinha or Cubarsí.
