As the 2024–25 La Liga season draws to a close, Atlético Madrid has officially announced that their star striker, Julián Álvarez, will remain with the club. This decision puts an end to persistent rumors linking the Argentine forward with a transfer to FC Barcelona.
The Catalan giants had shown strong interest in Álvarez, hoping to add him to their squad as part of manager Hansi Flick’s plans to reinforce Barcelona’s attacking options.
Julián Álvarez has enjoyed a phenomenal season, scoring 29 goals, and Atlético Madrid views him as an essential piece for their future ambitions. With the full backing of head coach Diego Simeone, the Madrid-based club intends to build their squad around Álvarez in the coming years. Their aim is to compete for both domestic trophies and European success, and retaining the services of the prolific striker is a crucial part of that strategy.
On the other hand, FC Barcelona is preparing for a summer of significant changes. Several players are expected to depart the club, whether on permanent transfers or loan moves. Among those reportedly on their way out are Ansu Fati, Pablo Torre, Víctor POW, and Iñaki Peña. Notably, Ansu Fati appears to be nearing a move to AS Monaco as Barcelona reshuffles its roster.
Despite ongoing financial limitations, Barcelona remains determined to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. The club has identified Luis Díaz of Liverpool and Marcus Rashford from Manchester United as key transfer targets.
Díaz, who is highly rated by Flick, has shown interest in making the switch to Spain, but his transfer fee—rumored to be between €70–85 million—could complicate negotiations. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is reportedly open to a move and even willing to accept a pay cut to join Barcelona, with a possible deal valued at around €47 million.
In addition to their transfer pursuits, Barcelona is working to secure the future of their rising star, Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old is set to become the highest-paid young player under a newly introduced La Liga youth salary rule, signaling the club’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.
Barcelona is also considering a move for Joan García, Espanyol’s promising young goalkeeper. García, whose release clause stands at €25–30 million, has attracted attention from other clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle, but remains a potential long-term option for Barcelona’s goalkeeping department.
With Atlético Madrid successfully retaining Álvarez, Barcelona must now shift focus and act decisively in the transfer market to remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.
