UEFA recently revealed its Team of the Season for the 2024–25 Champions League after the conclusion of the tournament. Surprisingly, the list featured only two Barcelona players, a decision that raised eyebrows considering the club’s impressive European campaign.
Under new manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona performed admirably, finishing second in the league phase and reaching the semi-finals.
Their European journey came to an end against Inter Milan in a tightly contested match, one marred by controversial officiating from Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, which sparked debates among fans and pundits alike.
Spanish publication El Nacional reported that Hansi Flick was left deeply dissatisfied with UEFA’s selection, particularly the omission of Barcelona star Pedri. Flick was vocal about his disappointment, branding the exclusion an “unprecedented scandal.” He argued that Pedri had delivered an exceptional season by every metric and played a vital role in Barcelona’s progress in the competition.
Flick stressed that Pedri’s consistent brilliance, especially in controlling the midfield and setting the tempo in crucial encounters, made his absence from the Team of the Season both shocking and unjustifiable.
In his remarks, reportedly shared through sources within the club, Flick expressed disbelief at the decision: “I am truly shocked by Pedri’s exclusion. Given his performances, numbers, and influence, this is completely incomprehensible.
If a player like Pedri doesn’t make the list, then who deserves to?” His frustration reflected not just personal loyalty but also broader criticism from analysts and supporters who had praised Pedri’s contribution throughout the tournament.
Adding to the controversy, UEFA’s Technical Observers Committee named only Raphinha and Lamine Yamal from Barcelona in their elite lineup. Meanwhile, the Team of the Season was largely dominated by Paris Saint-Germain players, who clinched the trophy after a commanding 5–0 win over Inter Milan in the final at the Allianz Arena.
PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé secured the Player of the Tournament award, while Désiré Doué edged out Lamine Yamal for Best Young Player honors after an outstanding display in the final.
Pedri’s exclusion has since become one of the tournament’s hottest topics, with debates continuing across social media and football circles. The widespread acclaim he received for his performances made his omission even more contentious, leading Flick to break his usual diplomatic stance and openly challenge UEFA’s decision.
