As the summer transfer window draws near, Chelsea is actively exploring ways to bolster its squad ahead of the new season. The club is reportedly eyeing a significant move involving a Barcelona player, with plans to include one of their own key players in a potential swap deal.
Chelsea’s board sees this opportunity as a strategic way to reinforce their team and bring better balance to their squad following a mixed campaign.
Meanwhile, Barcelona appears open to considering such proposals, especially as the club is in the midst of restructuring under their new head coach, Hansi Flick.
The Spanish giants are currently working to resolve financial constraints and free up space within their squad by moving on certain players. This would allow them to sign fresh talents capable of challenging for silverware in the coming season.
In this regard, Chelsea has formally submitted a swap deal proposal to Barcelona during the ongoing transfer window. According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, a well-known Spanish sports newspaper, Chelsea suggested exchanging their French forward, Christopher Nkunku, for Barcelona’s promising midfielder, Fermín López.
However, the report claims that Barcelona has already declined this proposal. Despite the club’s acknowledged need for an additional striker, they are reluctant to part with López.
New manager Hansi Flick reportedly holds the young Spaniard in high regard and considers him a valuable asset for the future. Although López isn’t known for prolific goal-scoring, his contributions on the pitch have made him a trusted figure in Flick’s plans moving forward.
Fermín López, who has been attracting attention from several European clubs, is also hoping to secure a spot in Spain’s national team under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente.
His impressive performances this season, which include eight goals and 11 assists across 46 appearances, have earned him recognition both in Spain and abroad. In fact, Italian giants Inter Milan have also shown interest in the young midfielder in recent months.
With both clubs having different priorities and visions for their squads, the proposed swap involving Nkunku and López seems unlikely to materialize for now. However, with the transfer window still open, further negotiations or alternative deals between Chelsea and Barcelona could emerge as both teams look to shape their rosters for the new campaign.
