Arsenal have reportedly struck a deal worth £64.4 million for a new signing, and this move could reshape the Premier League transfer dynamics. With the Gunners locking in on this target, Manchester United may now have a clearer path to finalize their interest in another forward — a £68.3 million-rated star. Initially, both English giants were eyeing the same prize: Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal and United each saw the Swede as the solution to their offensive woes. However, recent updates suggest that Arsenal has now pivoted toward a different striker, effectively pulling out of the Gyokeres race and indirectly freeing up the opportunity for United to swoop in.

 

The North London club’s desire to upgrade from Kai Havertz up front had them actively chasing high-caliber strikers. Meanwhile, Manchester United, unimpressed by the combined seven-goal return of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the last Premier League season, has also been eager to revamp their frontline with a proven goal-scorer.

 

Though both clubs had their sights set on Gyokeres, Arsenal now seems to have diverted its attention to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško. According to Diario Sport, Arsenal is on the verge of completing a €75 million (£64.4m) deal — add-ons included — for the Slovenian striker, marking a significant shift in the club’s transfer trajectory.

 

While Mikel Arteta’s men previously had a verbal agreement in place for Gyokeres, negotiations reportedly collapsed due to complications posed by Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas. The talks became tangled and overly drawn-out, prompting Arsenal to walk away from the deal altogether.

 

Interestingly, the Spanish outlet also mentioned that Gyokeres has a standing agreement with Sporting CP to leave the club for €60 million. But this figure has been met with skepticism. If Gyokeres were truly available at that price, many believe Arsenal would’ve sealed the transfer rather than coughing up more for Šeško, whose goal stats don’t stack up as impressively.

 

With Arsenal stepping away, Manchester United now have a clearer runway to reignite their pursuit of Gyokeres. Reports out of Portugal — particularly from O Jogo — claim that Sporting will demand a sum in the region of €80 million (£68.3m) to let go of the Swedish international, whose stock continues to rise.

 

Comparing the two, Šeško scored just 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig last season — solid, but not sensational. In stark contrast, Gyokeres racked up a jaw-dropping 39 goals in just 33 league matches, playing a pivotal role in delivering Sporting another Primeira Liga crown. By all metrics, Gyokeres looks like the more lethal option — and Manchester United may now be in pole position to get their man.
