Arsenal moved one step closer to their dream of winning the Premier League after securing a 2–0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium. Despite the positive result, the performance itself was far from convincing, as the Gunners struggled for most of the game before finally finding a breakthrough late in the match.
Mikel Arteta’s side found it extremely difficult to break down Everton’s well-organized defense. Under the guidance of David Moyes, the visitors stayed compact and disciplined, frustrating Arsenal throughout the contest in North London. For long periods, it looked as though the match would end in a frustrating draw for the home side.
However, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the 89th minute. Substitute Viktor Gyökeres reacted quickly inside the box to tap in a simple finish after a well-placed pass across goal from Piero Hincapié. The late strike finally gave Arsenal the lead they had been searching for all night and lifted the tension around the stadium.
The drama didn’t stop there. With Everton pushing forward in desperation, including goalkeeper Jordan Pickford joining a late corner, Arsenal were able to strike again. Young substitute Max Dowman sealed the victory by calmly finishing into an empty net, ensuring the Gunners collected all three points.
For Arteta, the most satisfying part of the evening was undoubtedly the impact of his substitutes. Gyökeres and Dowman both played decisive roles after coming off the bench, proving to be the difference in a match where Arsenal had struggled to find their rhythm.
Gyökeres had started the match on the bench, with Arteta choosing Kai Havertz as the starting striker. However, the Swedish forward’s late goal may now create a difficult selection decision for the manager ahead of upcoming matches. In addition to scoring, Gyökeres showed his physical presence by winning all of his ground duels and drawing fouls from Everton defenders.
Dowman also delivered an impressive cameo. The teenager made history by becoming Arsenal’s youngest goalscorer in the Premier League, surpassing a long-standing record previously held by Cesc Fàbregas. Beyond his goal, Dowman was lively and dangerous whenever he had the ball, even helping create the move that led to the opening goal.
While the scoreline suggested a comfortable victory, the performance raised some concerns. In particular, Bukayo Saka struggled to influence the game from the right wing. Despite playing the full match and wearing the captain’s armband, he failed to make a major impact in attack and continued a run of inconsistent form.
With important fixtures ahead, including a major European clash against Bayer Leverkusen, Arteta may now have serious decisions to make regarding his starting lineup. The impressive displays from Gyökeres and Dowman have certainly given the Arsenal manager plenty to consider as the title race and European campaign intensify.
