Wayne Rooney has expressed his excitement about the remarkable potential of Max Dowman, but he believes fans should not expect to see too much of the youngster during the closing stages of the Premier League season.
Dowman, who is just 16 years old, recently made history by becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. The teenage sensation scored Arsenal’s second goal in a 2–0 victory over Everton F.C. at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
The match had looked as though it might end in frustration for Arsenal, who were struggling to break down Everton for much of the game. However, late strikes from Viktor Gyokeres and Dowman secured a crucial win for the league leaders.
The victory became even more significant later that day when Manchester City F.C. were unable to defeat West Ham United F.C.. As a result, Arsenal F.C. now sit nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table with just seven matches remaining.
Supporters have understandably been thrilled by Dowman’s breakthrough season. The young forward actually made his league debut back in August, and many fans are eager to see him feature more frequently as Arsenal push for what could be an incredible quadruple.
Alongside their title challenge, Mikel Arteta’s side are still competing strongly in Europe and domestic cup competitions. They remain in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League, are preparing for the upcoming Carabao Cup Final next weekend, and have also reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Despite the excitement around Dowman, Rooney believes the club will manage the youngster’s involvement carefully. Speaking on his show, he pointed out that Dowman is still in school and must balance football with his education, including his GCSE exams.
Rooney suggested that while it is an incredible opportunity for the teenager to be part of such a successful squad, Arsenal will likely limit his appearances over the coming weeks.
Rooney praised the young player’s mentality and confidence, noting that Dowman appears unfazed by the pressure when he is on the pitch. According to him, the teenager shows composure, holds onto the ball well, and is willing to take on defenders, which reflects a strong belief in his abilities. He also expressed confidence that manager Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s senior players will help ensure Dowman remains grounded while enjoying his early success.
Meanwhile, Gyokeres was full of praise for the youngster after the Everton match, saying that Dowman’s calmness and decision-making make it hard to believe he is only 16 years old. He added that the teenager has returned from injury with the same confidence and quality he showed before, describing him as an exceptional talent.
Arsenal will temporarily shift their focus away from their league campaign this week as they prepare for a crucial Champions League round-of-16 second-leg clash against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The first leg in Germany ended 1–1 after a late penalty from Kai Havertz rescued a draw for the Premier League leaders against his former club.
