Arsenal may explore strengthening their squad in the January transfer window following a difficult start to the 2024/25 season marked by injury woes.
After narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City last season, Arsenal entered the current campaign with high hopes. However, after 15 matches, they find themselves in third place behind Liverpool and Chelsea, with injuries playing a significant role in their struggles.
Several key players have faced lengthy absences, including captain Martin Ødegaard, who has been sidelined for nearly two months due to an ankle injury. Defender Ben White has also been out following surgery, further depleting the squad.
Additionally, injuries to players such as Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel, and Oleksandr Zinchenko have forced manager Mikel Arteta to adapt his plans. These setbacks have disrupted the team’s rhythm, making reinforcements a priority when the transfer window opens.
Arteta remains optimistic about addressing the team’s needs in January. “The window offers us a chance to strengthen if necessary and if the circumstances allow. We’re evaluating the situation every week. I’m hopeful that in a few weeks, things will improve,” he told reporters.
However, Arsenal’s transfer dealings face added complexity due to the recent departure of sporting director Edu. In the interim, his former assistant Jason Ayto will oversee recruitment, while the club reportedly considers former Manchester United director Dan Ashworth for the role.
Arteta also provided an update on Riccardo Calafiori, who missed Arsenal’s last two Premier League games due to a groin issue. He praised the player’s eagerness but stressed the need for caution. “Riccardo is so eager to train and play that we have to hold him back. Unfortunately, he played more than we intended due to injuries, which led to his groin problem,” Arteta explained.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are gearing up for a crucial Champions League match against Monaco on Wednesday. Despite a sluggish start in the competition, where they currently sit in 10th place, a win could significantly boost their chances of advancing to the next round.
