Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly urged the club’s management to pursue Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season, sitting four points clear of second-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.
Slot’s tenure at Anfield began on a high note after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, who left the squad in a solid state following a significant midfield overhaul last summer.
Despite Liverpool’s impressive form, including leading their Champions League group, Slot sees room for improvement. Reports from Spain suggest he has requested the club’s hierarchy to secure De Jong’s services.
The Dutch international has faced injuries and inconsistent performances over the past year, prompting Barcelona to consider selling him at the right price.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick reportedly views De Jong as far from his peak, frequently using him as a substitute this season. De Jong, one of Barcelona’s highest-paid players, is under contract until 2026, but the club may be eager to offload him to avoid losing him on a free transfer later.
Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly lost interest in De Jong. However, Slot remains confident in the midfielder’s potential resurgence at Anfield. He has reportedly asked Liverpool’s board to initiate negotiations for a January transfer.
Despite Slot’s interest, Liverpool’s management is cautious about overspending. Their goal is to secure De Jong for around €50m (£41m) or less while convincing him that Liverpool is the ideal destination.
Meanwhile, Manchester City has struggled with Rodri’s injury disrupting their season, but former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant believes the Reds are less dependent on individual players, contributing to their current success.
