Ex-Referee Comments on Arsenal’s Denied Penalty Against Everton

Arsenal narrowly missed out on a potential penalty during their scoreless encounter with Everton, as VAR ruled against them.

The Gunners were frustrated by Everton’s solid defensive performance at the Emirates Stadium, losing a chance to narrow the points gap with league leaders Liverpool, who also drew against Fulham.

The turning point came late in the game when Arsenal’s Thomas Partey was brought down in the box by Vitalii Mykolenko.

Arsenal players and fans appealed for a penalty, but a VAR review determined that Mykolenko made a slight but decisive contact with the ball before colliding with Partey, classifying the challenge as legal.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean supported the VAR decision. Speaking on Sky Sports News, Dean explained: “I believe the defender just managed to get a faint touch on the ball before contacting the player. In my view, it’s not a penalty.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta avoided controversy by choosing not to comment on the incident. “I haven’t seen it, so I cannot comment on that,” he stated after the match.

Meanwhile, Everton manager Sean Dyche praised Mykolenko’s defensive brilliance and acknowledged his team’s collective effort. “Vitalii Mykolenko was exceptional,” Dyche said. “Our wide players, though not naturally defensive, adapted well. Achieving six consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League is an incredible accomplishment.”
