Kieran Tierney has finally opened up about his strained relationship with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, detailing the emotional challenges he has faced and the events prompting his decision to pursue a transfer in January. In a revealing interview, the Scottish defender expressed his frustration over being marginalized despite his dedication to the team.
Tierney, once a dependable and passionate Arsenal player, shared his disappointment at being overlooked for less experienced academy players. “I’ve given everything for this club, both on and off the pitch, yet I find myself sidelined,” he stated.
The breaking point came earlier this season when Arteta opted to field an academy player in a critical match, leaving Tierney out of the squad. “It felt like a dagger to my heart,” he admitted, emphasizing his support for nurturing young talent but not at the expense of loyalty and experience.
The defender also reflected on the sacrifices he made to join Arsenal, including leaving his childhood club, Celtic. “I was sold a vision of being a key part of this team’s future. I embraced that role wholeheartedly, even playing through injuries,” he revealed.
However, Tierney feels Arteta’s recent decisions are personal, saying, “It’s hard not to take it that way when you’re consistently overlooked despite proving your worth.”
Tierney’s exclusion has taken a toll on his personal and professional life. “It’s not just about playing time; it’s about respect. I’ve had sleepless nights thinking about this,” he confessed. With interest from clubs in England and abroad, Tierney is determined to leave by January, saying, “It’s not just about finding a new club; it’s about finding a place where I’m valued.”
