Mikel Arteta has shared Arsenal’s strategy for managing Bukayo Saka’s absence, emphasizing the club’s intent to explore internal solutions while remaining open to potential January signings if an exceptional opportunity arises.
Speaking on Monday, Arteta confirmed Saka would be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury and revealed that fellow winger Raheem Sterling is also sidelined with a knee issue.
Despite these setbacks, Arteta remains focused on maximizing the existing squad’s potential.
He expressed confidence in Arsenal’s internal options but admitted the club could act in the transfer market if an extraordinary player became available. “We have many options within the squad,” Arteta stated. “But if something unbelievable is out there and the club is ready, we’ll consider it.”
Arsenal’s success in previous January transfer windows bolsters this approach. The club has brought in key players during this period, including Jorginho and Leandro Trossard last year, and Martin Odegaard on loan in 2021, demonstrating their ability to make calculated and impactful decisions when necessary.
Arteta also addressed the recent departure of sporting director Edu, who was instrumental in building Arsenal’s current team. Jason Ayto has taken over the role on an interim basis, and Arteta expressed confidence in the club’s readiness for the January window. “The preparation is done, and we’re ready if something happens,” he said. “We didn’t anticipate losing both Bukayo and Raheem simultaneously.
We expected challenges, particularly in defense, but we are prepared to adapt.”
To cover for Saka’s absence, Arteta is exploring various tactical adjustments. In Arsenal’s recent 5-1 win over Crystal Palace, Gabriel Martinelli played on the right wing, and other players, including Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard, are being considered as alternatives.
Arteta expressed optimism about finding creative solutions, saying, “I have some ideas, but I want to discuss them with the players. This challenge will push us to evolve and adapt.”
Highlighting Arsenal’s resilience in dealing with injuries to key players like Martin Odegaard and several defenders in the past, Arteta concluded, “We will keep finding ways and tackle this with positive energy. These moments force us to grow and think differently.”
