Manchester United are on the verge of a major transition under their incoming manager, Ruben Amorim. Former club legend Dwight Yorke has already pinpointed a potential signing he believes could be a game-changer for the Red Devils. Yorke has recommended that United pursue Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, a striker with raw talent and the physicality needed to reinvigorate the team’s attacking options. He sees Nunez as the ideal marquee signing to usher in a new era at Old Trafford.
The recommendation follows a difficult period for Manchester United, which saw Erik ten Hag dismissed after a disappointing run of form. The team managed only 11 points from their first nine Premier League matches, struggling particularly in the attacking department. Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have contributed just two league goals combined, highlighting the urgent need for reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Amorim, who is set to assume managerial duties during the November international break, will take charge of his first match against Ipswich Town. Known for his tactical flexibility and ability to develop young players, the Portuguese coach is expected to make significant squad changes. Yorke insists that one of Amorim’s primary objectives should be securing a dominant striker, and in his view, Nunez perfectly fits the profile.
“If I had to pick a center-forward for Manchester United, I’d take a chance on Darwin Nunez,” Yorke stated in a recent interview. “Many might question this choice because of his inconsistency, but I see a player with enormous potential. He has the physicality, aggression, and hunger that United currently lack in attack. If given regular playing time, I believe he could become one of the most formidable forwards in the Premier League.”
Since joining Liverpool from Benfica for £85 million in 2022, Nunez has shown glimpses of brilliance but has struggled for consistency. So far this season, the 25-year-old has managed just one league goal, leading some to question his long-term viability at Anfield. Despite this, Yorke remains convinced that Nunez possesses the attributes needed to succeed and believes a system tailored to his strengths could unlock his full potential.
“I’d take a risk on Nunez,” Yorke added. “United need a striker who offers both technical ability and physical dominance. While players like Ollie Watkins are impressive, Nunez has a unique style that can disrupt defenses. Given consistent opportunities, I believe he has what it takes to dominate in the Premier League.”
Nunez remains contracted to Liverpool until 2028, but speculation about his future continues to swirl. Reports suggest that Liverpool could explore signing another striker by 2025, which might open the door for Nunez to seek a new challenge. Whether Manchester United would attempt to sign a key player from a fierce rival remains uncertain, but Yorke’s endorsement adds an interesting angle to the ongoing debate.
Meanwhile, Amorim is expected to make sweeping changes to the United squad, with several departures anticipated by January. Sources suggest that Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, and Antony could all be on their way out as the new manager looks to reshape the team. Offloading these players would free up significant funds, with Casemiro and Antony alone commanding £350,000 and £200,000 in weekly wages, respectively. As Amorim prepares for his tenure, his bold approach signals a decisive shift in United’s strategy, setting the stage for a transformative period at Old Trafford.
