Arsenal’s hunt for a world-class striker has taken an interesting turn, with club legend Paul Merson strongly backing them as the most suitable destination for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. According to Merson, if Isak leaves St. James’ Park, Arsenal is the only club in England—or even globally—where he should consider moving. The Gunners are in need of a proven goal scorer, and Isak’s skill set makes him a perfect candidate for their squad.
Recent performances have only fueled speculation about Isak’s potential departure from Newcastle. His outstanding displays against Arsenal in the League Cup semi-finals caught the attention of many, especially his ability to trouble defenders with his pace and technical prowess. He was a constant threat, scoring in the first leg at the Emirates and putting in a dominant display in the return fixture at St. James’ Park. His movement and finishing ability left Arsenal’s defense struggling, particularly William Saliba, who had difficulty containing the Swedish striker.
Although Isak had a goal controversially ruled out by VAR in the second leg, he still played a key role in Newcastle’s opener by hitting the post after dribbling past Saliba, allowing Jacob Murphy to score from the rebound. His performance only solidified his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most exciting forwards. With the summer transfer window approaching, the discussion about his future is intensifying, and Arsenal has emerged as a leading contender for his signature.
Reports suggest that Mikel Arteta is eager to bring Isak to North London, seeing him as the ideal striker to lead Arsenal’s frontline. However, Newcastle has placed a hefty £150 million price tag on the 24-year-old, making any potential transfer difficult. Given Arsenal’s recent heavy spending, acquiring Isak would require financial maneuvering, including potential player sales to balance the books. Merson believes Arsenal is the only realistic destination for Isak, considering the financial and squad situations of other top clubs. He pointed out that Manchester City is not an option due to Erling Haaland’s presence, while Manchester United may not have the financial strength to make such a signing. He also ruled out Tottenham and Aston Villa, suggesting that neither club is in a position to make a move for the Swedish striker.
Real Madrid could be a potential competitor for Isak, but Merson remains skeptical about their interest. The Spanish giants are expected to sign Kylian Mbappé, making it unlikely that they would pursue another expensive forward. With Madrid seemingly out of the picture, Arsenal appears to be the most logical destination for Isak if he decides to leave Newcastle. His versatility, ability to play centrally or out wide, and technical attributes make him a strong fit for Arteta’s tactical system.
Newcastle, however, will likely resist any attempts to sell their star striker. Since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, Isak has steadily improved, becoming one of Eddie Howe’s most valuable players. His statistics this season underline his importance, with 17 goals and five assists in the Premier League, along with impressive contributions in key passing, dribbling, and shooting metrics. His consistency and all-around attacking ability make him one of the league’s most complete forwards.
For Arsenal, securing Isak’s signature would significantly strengthen their squad as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title and compete in the Champions League. However, Financial Fair Play regulations could play a role in determining whether a deal is feasible. Merson acknowledged that Newcastle’s financial situation could influence their decision to sell, and if they are forced to offload players, Arsenal should be prepared to make their move.
