Barcelona has officially stepped back from pursuing one of the most high-profile deals of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Currently, the Catalan giants sit atop the Spanish league standings with 54 points. However, their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, share the same points tally but trail in second place due to goal difference.
According to recent reports, Bayern Munich has decided to withdraw its contract renewal offer for Joshua Kimmich. The German club made this decision after the player delayed making a final call on his future.
Spanish journalist Luis Miguel Sanz, writing for Sport, has confirmed that Barcelona has not altered its stance and will not compete for Kimmich’s signature.
Various media sources have linked the German midfielder with a potential move to Real Madrid, as Los Blancos seek reinforcements following the retirement of legendary midfielder Toni Kroos.
Sanz further revealed that Barcelona’s management, after consulting with head coach Hansi Flick, has determined that their midfield is already well-equipped. Consequently, the club will prioritize strengthening other positions in the upcoming transfer window, particularly given its financial constraints.
From the moment Flick took charge at Barcelona, signing Kimmich was at the top of his wishlist. The two share a strong working relationship from their time together at Bayern Munich.
However, Flick understands the club’s financial limitations, which made it difficult to pursue a deal for his former player. As a result, Barcelona president Joan Laporta ultimately agreed to step away from negotiations.
Barcelona’s withdrawal leaves the door open for Real Madrid, who are now considered strong contenders to land Kimmich. The Spanish capital club is eager to bolster its midfield depth following Kroos’ departure, and Kimmich’s versatility, experience, and leadership make him an attractive option.
Despite his availability, Barcelona remains firm in its decision not to enter a bidding war. The club is focused on addressing other key areas in its squad while navigating its well-documented financial difficulties.
Laporta and Flick are aligned in their belief that the team’s midfield does not require immediate reinforcements, especially with the emergence of young talents already present in the squad.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Real Madrid to see whether they will take advantage of Barcelona’s withdrawal and secure Kimmich’s services.
