Arsenal has gained a significant edge in their pursuit of a key transfer target, as reports suggest they are now ‘closer’ to signing a £50 million-rated winger than their main competitor, Bayern Munich.
The Gunners have received a boost in their efforts to secure Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, with Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk indicating that Arsenal is in a stronger position than Bayern Munich in the race for the talented Spanish international.
Mikel Arteta’s side has been performing well in the Premier League, but they are poised to finish as runners-up for the third consecutive season. Currently in second place, they trail Liverpool by 12 points with just nine games remaining. Given Liverpool’s impressive form, with only one league defeat so far, Arsenal would need an extraordinary turn of events to challenge for the title.
Despite this, Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta are already planning for the summer transfer window. Strengthening the squad is a priority, with a new center-forward high on the agenda. However, acquiring a top-class winger is also a key objective, and Williams has emerged as their main target.
Fans will be encouraged by reports that Arsenal is progressing in negotiations ahead of Bayern Munich, despite earlier suggestions that the German giants were leading the race.
Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Williams appears to be stalling due to financial constraints. The Bundesliga club must first sell players before they can move forward with a deal. Their head of sport, Max Eberl, is attempting to offload Kingsley Coman, who has drawn interest from Tottenham, Newcastle, and clubs in Saudi Arabia. If Coman is sold, Bayern would have the funds to make a move for Williams.
Additionally, Serge Gnabry is available for transfer, but so far, there has been little interest from potential buyers. Bayern must wait to see if they can complete a sale before making a final decision on Williams.
Meanwhile, Leroy Sane’s contract situation remains unresolved. The winger will become a free agent in the summer, and while discussions about his future are ongoing with Arsenal and Liverpool, Bayern has yet to decide whether to offer him a new contract.
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith remains skeptical about Williams’ potential move to the Emirates, suggesting that he could struggle for playing time behind Bukayo Saka. Smith noted that while Williams is a talented player, he may not want to join a club where he would primarily serve as a backup. As Arsenal carefully navigates the transfer market, it remains to be seen whether they will ultimately secure the young winger.
