FC Barcelona is currently undergoing a rebuilding phase under their new manager, Hansi Flick, and much of the focus has shifted to securing the club’s future in attack.
While veteran striker Robert Lewandowski continues to perform at an exceptional level—netting 23 goals in just 24 appearances this season—the club recognizes the importance of preparing for life after the prolific 36-year-old forward. Lewandowski’s contract is set to run until 2026, with a possible extension to 2027 depending on appearances, but Barcelona is already scouting his potential successor.
At the top of their list is Viktor Gyökeres, the Swedish striker currently making headlines at Sporting CP. Since his 2023 move from Coventry City, the 26-year-old has been in outstanding form, scoring an impressive 40 goals in 41 matches this season.
His standout performance includes a memorable hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League. Known for his strength, movement, and goal-scoring instincts, Gyökeres embodies the attributes of a modern striker capable of leading Barcelona’s frontline for years to come.
Sporting director Deco is reportedly a major admirer of Gyökeres, viewing him as a natural successor to Lewandowski. Barcelona is considering a possible summer 2025 move for around €70 million, with a plan to loan him back to Sporting CP for a season. This approach would allow Lewandowski to remain the focal point of the attack while easing Gyökeres into the team for a smoother transition.
However, much depends on Lewandowski’s form and future. If the Polish star continues at his current rate, Barcelona might extend his contract or share responsibilities between him and Gyökeres.
One of the complications is Gyökeres’ release clause, currently set at €100 million, though Sporting could be open to negotiating, especially if a player like Vitor Roque—valued at €25 million and struggling for minutes at Camp Nou—is included in the deal.
Barcelona must also navigate its financial limitations. Although recent improvements under La Liga’s financial regulations have provided some relief, major investments still require careful planning. A significant boost in January 2025 could help facilitate such a high-profile signing.
Interest in Gyökeres is high, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Atlético Madrid all reportedly tracking him. While Barcelona remains his preferred destination, he may prioritize a club offering guaranteed starting opportunities.
In the meantime, Barcelona is monitoring alternative targets such as Alexander Isak, Jonathan David, and other high-profile strikers, though Gyökeres remains their ideal long-term solution.
