Barcelona achieved an important victory over visiting Real Mallorca in the 33rd round of the La Liga season, increasing their total points to 76. This win temporarily places them seven points ahead of their arch-rivals Real Madrid, who still have a game in hand against Getafe later tonight.
The triumph was a crucial step in Barcelona’s ongoing bid for domestic dominance and a potential treble this season, as the club remains active in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, Spanish sports daily Marca revealed that Barcelona has reached an understanding with their current head coach, Hansi Flick, regarding an extension of his contract.
Flick, the German tactician who joined Barcelona with high expectations, currently has a contract set to run until the summer of 2026. However, due to the team’s recent resurgence and strong performances under his leadership, the club’s management is eager to secure his services for a longer period.
According to the report, both Barcelona and Hansi Flick have agreed in principle to prolong the existing deal by an additional two years, extending it through to the summer of 2028. Despite the agreement being settled, the club has opted not to make the extension official immediately. There are key reasons behind this decision.
Firstly, the Barcelona board wants to maintain full focus on the remainder of the current campaign, where the team is still competing on multiple fronts and chasing major trophies. Club officials believe that any off-pitch distractions could affect the squad’s concentration and performance in these crucial final weeks.
Secondly, financial restrictions imposed by La Liga’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations currently prevent the club from making new signings or formally renewing contracts. This includes deals such as Flick’s extension. To navigate this situation, the club’s management has decided to delay the official announcement until after the conclusion of the season.
However, Barcelona’s leadership remains optimistic that they will resolve these financial hurdles by June 30th. A significant factor contributing to this confidence is the anticipated income from selling VIP boxes at the newly renovated Camp Nou stadium.
The expected boost in revenue should help the club meet FFP requirements, allowing them to proceed with the contract renewal and other key plans for the future.
