FC Barcelona is preparing for a significant transition as they begin to plan for a future without Robert Lewandowski. The veteran Polish striker, who will turn 36 in 2025, has been instrumental in the club’s recent resurgence, leading them to domestic and European successes since his arrival in 2022.
However, the club recognizes the need to secure a long-term replacement, and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez has surfaced as their top candidate. The Argentine forward has earned acclaim in Serie A for his sharp finishing, creative play, and consistent goal-scoring record, making him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
Martínez’s rise to prominence has been impressive. Since joining Inter in 2018, he has surpassed 100 goals and played a pivotal role in their achievements, including a run to the 2023 UEFA Champions League final.
At 26 years old, he is entering his prime, and his versatility allows him to excel both as a lone striker and alongside a strike partner. Furthermore, his leadership qualities — occasionally captaining the side — make him an attractive option to step into Lewandowski’s role at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona’s pursuit of Martínez comes at a crucial moment. Although Lewandowski has revived the team’s fortunes and led them to a La Liga title, his advancing age has prompted the club to search for a successor.
Signing Martínez would not only secure Barcelona’s attacking strength for years to come but also allow the Argentine to learn directly from Lewandowski, easing the transition while preserving the team’s offensive potency.
However, acquiring Martínez won’t be straightforward. Inter Milan are determined to hold onto their star, who remains under contract until 2026, and would demand a substantial fee in the region of €90-100 million.
While Barcelona’s financial situation has seen improvement, any deal for Martínez would require strategic negotiation. The Catalan club might explore player exchange options, potentially involving talents like Ansu Fati or Ferran Torres to offset costs.
Complicating matters further, Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on Martínez. The North London club, currently rebuilding its squad, views the striker as an ideal addition and possesses the financial resources and managerial vision to compete for his signature. Despite this, Barcelona’s rich history and the prospect of playing under Xavi Hernández could give them a decisive edge.
As the 2025 summer transfer window approaches, the race for Martínez promises to be one of the year’s most closely watched sagas, symbolizing a new chapter for whichever club secures his services.
