Arsenal is reportedly nearing the completion of a major signing, with an £85 million-rated striker in their sights and personal terms already largely agreed upon. The club is prioritizing the addition of a high-quality forward this summer, following a season where they narrowly missed out on the Premier League title to Liverpool.
With new sporting director Andrea Berta preparing for his first transfer window at the Emirates, manager Mikel Arteta is eager to strengthen key areas of the squad.
One of the main criticisms of Arsenal’s campaign was their lack of a consistent goal-scoring centre-forward. Gabriel Jesus, who was in fine form, suffered a season-ending ACL injury, while Kai Havertz filled in admirably in the striker role.
However, neither player is considered a long-term solution capable of delivering 20 or more goals per season. Football pundit Ally McCoist highlighted the team’s need for a prolific striker, noting that while Havertz is a talented player, Arsenal requires a natural number nine who can consistently find the back of the net.
Reports suggest that securing a top striker is at the top of Arsenal’s transfer agenda, with several notable names being linked to the club. Among them is Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, who has had an outstanding season, scoring an incredible 52 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions. Such remarkable numbers have attracted attention from several top European clubs.
Arsenal appears to be making significant progress in their pursuit of Gyokeres, identifying him as a primary target for the upcoming window.
According to Football Transfers, negotiations are underway, and further talks with Sporting are scheduled to take place after the Portuguese Cup final later this month. It is believed that Arsenal and the player’s representatives have already settled on personal terms, with a contract offer in place.
However, reaching an agreement with Sporting remains a hurdle, as the Portuguese side is expected to demand a large portion of the transfer fee upfront, possibly even the full £85 million release clause. Interest from major clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Bayern Munich, and other Premier League rivals could drive up the price, forcing Arsenal to make Gyokeres one of their most expensive acquisitions.
Sporting manager Rui Borges has praised Gyokeres for his tremendous value and influence, emphasizing that the striker is a game-changer whose quality is beyond question. Arsenal hopes to secure his services and finally add the clinical finisher they’ve been missing.
