Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made it clear to sporting director Deco who he wants to lead the team’s forward line next season, despite the club being linked with several well-known attacking talents during an eventful transfer period.
While names such as Erling Haaland, Marcus Rashford, Nico Williams, Alexander Isak, Rafael Leão, and Jeremy Doku have been frequently mentioned in transfer discussions, Flick has singled out Julián Álvarez as his preferred candidate to become the focal point of Barcelona’s attack.
Flick has openly expressed his admiration for Álvarez, emphasizing that the Argentine forward is the player he truly desires. He believes Álvarez would thrive in La Liga and feels confident that the player’s qualities perfectly suit the tactical system he intends to introduce at the club.
According to Flick, both he and the Barcelona board are determined to secure Álvarez’s services as part of their efforts to refresh and strengthen the attacking department, especially as the futures of several current forwards remain uncertain.
Presently plying his trade at Atlético Madrid and having already achieved World Cup success with Argentina, Álvarez is viewed as an ideal long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
The combination of his youth, clinical finishing, and creative abilities make him a fitting figure to lead Barcelona’s front line in the coming years. His playing style and versatility align with Flick’s vision for a dynamic and fluid attack.
However, Atlético Madrid have placed a hefty €150 million release clause on Álvarez, making negotiations potentially complex. Despite this, both Flick and club president Joan Laporta are reportedly enthusiastic about finalizing a deal, with initial plans for a 2026 move but hopes of accelerating the transfer if financial conditions allow.
While other attacking options remain on the table, including Marcus Rashford—who may consider lowering his salary demands to make a switch possible—and alternatives like Nico Williams and Ademola Lookman, these players are largely being considered as secondary options. A move for Liverpool’s Luis Díaz is also being explored, but Álvarez remains Flick’s top priority.
Although Erling Haaland continues to be admired by the club hierarchy, financial constraints and the complexity of his contract situation could delay any serious pursuit. Ultimately, Flick’s clear preference for Álvarez signals Barcelona’s commitment to youthful, strategic recruitment over headline-grabbing transfers, as they look to build a forward line capable of delivering long-term success.
