German manager Hansi Flick arrived at Barcelona with a clear strategy and specific objectives for the club’s future. Fully aware of the weaknesses within the current squad, Flick is equally conscious of the financial limitations facing the Catalan giants.
In meetings with sporting director Deco and other top officials, Flick made his position unmistakably clear: if Barcelona can only afford a single signing in the upcoming transfer window, it must be an attacking winger.
Flick’s approach is shaped by a realistic understanding of the club’s situation, particularly the Financial Fair Play restrictions and the uncertain status of a proposed €100 million financial deal tied to the stadium’s VIP boxes.
With no guarantee yet of returning to a “1:1” spending ratio, Flick emphasized the importance of making the most efficient use of the club’s limited resources. In his tactical system, strengthening the wide areas of attack has emerged as the most pressing requirement.
According to reports from Spanish outlet El Nacional, Barcelona’s recruitment team has been closely observing Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman. The Atalanta star ticks all the boxes for Flick, with his speed, dribbling ability, capacity to win one-on-one duels, and his effectiveness when cutting in from the left wing. Beyond his standout performances in Italy this season, Lookman’s relatively modest transfer fee makes him a viable target within Barcelona’s current budget constraints.
Lookman also offers versatility, as he is capable of operating on both flanks — a quality Flick holds in high regard for achieving tactical flexibility. Flick has been firm in stating that while rumors suggest the club might prioritize defensive signings, his immediate focus isn’t on defense.
He has expressed confidence in the development of young defender Coparsi, alongside the experience of Iñigo Martínez, and the contributions of Koundé and Eric García. Ronald Araújo also remains a vital figure, pending further clarity on his future.
With young talent Lamine Yamal already making a name for himself and Rafinha securing the opposite flank, Flick believes an additional winger is crucial. Such a player would not only offer depth but also provide the team with an option capable of breaking down tight defenses, especially during congested fixture periods or injury crises.
Flick’s message to Deco and the Barcelona board is direct: if only one player can be brought in this summer, it must be a dynamic attacking winger. The responsibility now rests with Deco to fulfill this vision.
