Victor Gyokeres has reportedly arrived at London Colney to undergo a medical with Arsenal today after reaching a verbal agreement with the club on a five-year contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Swedish striker has been a major target for Arsenal this summer, with reports earlier this week suggesting that the deal was close to completion and could be made official in the coming days.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, has been eager to complete the club’s transfer business early ahead of the new season. After agreeing to activate Martin Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause from Real Sociedad, Gyokeres was marked as Arsenal’s prime target to strengthen their attack.
Reports on Tuesday indicated that the Gunners had chosen Gyokeres as their top striker signing and planned to finalise the move after Sporting Lisbon’s Portuguese Cup final, which was believed to be his last game for the club.
However, the situation has taken a turn after comments from Gyokeres’ uncle following Sporting’s title celebrations. In an interview with Portuguese media outlet Record, Chris Gyokeres shared that the family had made a decision for Victor to remain at Sporting for at least another season. Expressing his joy during the celebrations, he mentioned how much they appreciated the country, the club, and its passionate supporters, hinting that staying in Portugal was now their preference.
Adding to the uncertainty, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pedro Goncalves admitted that Gyokeres has remained tight-lipped about his future in the dressing room. Speaking on Canal 11, Goncalves revealed that although teammates had asked him about his plans, Gyokeres playfully dodged the question, claiming he couldn’t predict the future. Goncalves confessed he learned most of what he knew from transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and avoided pressing his teammate for details.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, another club previously linked with Gyokeres, appear to be out of contention following their Europa League final defeat, which confirmed their absence from next season’s Champions League — a factor believed to be important to the striker.
While Arsenal were optimistic about landing the 26-year-old forward, these latest developments suggest the Gunners might face disappointment.
With his uncle’s remarks and the player’s reluctance to disclose his plans, Victor Gyokeres’ future remains unresolved, leaving Arsenal’s pursuit hanging in the balance as Sporting prepares for their final cup clash.
