Barcelona’s 2024/25 season drew to a close after an eventful and memorable campaign, marked by both challenges and achievements. Under the guidance of German coach Hansi Flick, who took charge for the first time this season, the club experienced significant progress.
Flick’s leadership brought stability and confidence to the team, steering them through difficult moments and important milestones while also securing notable successes.
As reported by the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, the final match against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés carried extra significance beyond being the season finale — it also marked the departure of several players who would no longer continue with the Blaugrana.
After ten intense months in charge, Flick took decisive action following the match. He informed certain players that they would not be part of his plans for the upcoming season, asking them to say their goodbyes to teammates. Although official announcements have yet to be made, it is increasingly evident who will be leaving the club.
One of the players facing an uncertain future is Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. The veteran, who had been brought out of retirement in October to support the team, has been offered a contract extension. However, Szczęsny is reportedly weighing his options, considering his family’s needs and the likelihood of playing as backup to Marc-André ter Stegen. With Ter Stegen recovered from injury and expected to start against Bilbao, Szczęsny might be contemplating retirement once again.
Iñaki Peña, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, appears to be another departure. Despite stepping up admirably during Ter Stegen’s absence, Peña lost his starting role to Szczęsny. He is likely to feature one last time as a sign of appreciation before leaving the club after over 12 years.
Ansu Fati, once considered the future of Barcelona’s attack, endured a season plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Given multiple opportunities by Flick, Fati struggled to meet expectations. Though his contract runs until 2027, a summer exit now seems inevitable, either through a sale or contract termination.
Midfielder Pablo Torre, who showed promise early in his tenure, has also struggled for game time amid fierce midfield competition. With his appearances dwindling since early 2025, a loan move or permanent transfer is under serious consideration.
Lastly, Pau Víctor, despite showing dedication and professionalism, is expected to be sent on loan to gain further experience, even though he remains under contract until 2029.
