Monday Morning Transfer Update: Arsenal Wraps Up Deal for Elite Playmaker as Mikel Arteta Nears Second Summer Signing
Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of a world-class playmaker, likened to Kevin De Bruyne, with a four-year contract agreed. The player is scheduled for a medical today, and manager Mikel Arteta is set to officially announce his second signing of the summer later.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle United are all pursuing Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroonian attacker has enjoyed an exceptional campaign, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s standout forwards.
With Ivan Toney departing for Al-Ahli last summer, many anticipated Brentford would falter. However, Mbeumo, alongside DR Congo striker Yoane Wissa, revitalized the Bees’ frontline.
Brentford’s attack outperformed expectations this season, netting 66 goals and finishing 10th — a marked improvement from their previous tally of 56 goals and a 16th-place finish. Mbeumo was central to this success, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists. Only top names like Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, and Alexander Isak scored more.
It’s been a career-best season for Mbeumo, who has now become Brentford’s talisman and one of the most sought-after forwards in English football. Manchester United have reportedly identified him as a prime target to strengthen their underperforming forward line.
Under Ruben Amorim, United struggled, finishing 15th with one of the league’s poorest attacking records — outscoring only Everton and the three relegated clubs: Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and Southampton.
Mbeumo would represent a major upgrade for United, offering consistent goal contributions and adding much-needed athleticism to Amorim’s squad — a trait the manager has prioritized in transfer targets. His versatility also makes him valuable, having featured as a striker, right winger, attacking midfielder, and even right wing-back during his time at Brentford.
Despite United’s strong interest and reported talks over a potential summer deal, they face stiff competition. Newcastle are believed to be leading the race, while Arsenal are actively monitoring the situation. According to Romano, Arsenal, United, and Newcastle are all in contention for Mbeumo’s signature.
United have already missed out on one domestic target this summer after Ipswich striker Liam Delap chose Chelsea over them. Without swift action, history could repeat itself for United in their chase for Mbeumo.
