Barcelona’s leadership, under the guidance of president Joan Laporta, is preparing to adopt an ambitious approach in the upcoming summer transfer window. This strategy forms part of a broader, long-term effort to reinforce the first-team squad and push forward with the club’s ongoing rebuilding phase.
The ultimate objective for the Catalan giants is to reclaim their position at the pinnacle of European football by capturing the UEFA Champions League title — a trophy they haven’t won since 2015.
Although the team has shown noticeable improvements in both performance and results in recent seasons, the club’s management recognizes that returning to Europe’s elite requires additional reinforcements. The plan involves strengthening key areas in the defense, midfield, and attack.
The aim is to provide newly appointed head coach Hansi Flick with a well-equipped squad capable of competing against the best teams across Europe, restoring Barcelona’s continental reputation, and meeting the high expectations of its supporters.
According to reports from Spanish media outlets, Barcelona has now initiated serious talks to secure the services of Ghanaian international Thomas Partey, who currently plays as a midfielder for Arsenal. The 31-year-old’s contract at the North London club is set to expire at the end of June, and while Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly expressed his desire to keep the player, no agreement has yet been reached over a contract extension.
The British tabloid The Sun has revealed that Barcelona’s board has opened discussions with Partey’s representatives regarding a possible free transfer this summer. Given the player’s uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium, he has become an appealing target for Barcelona, who see him as a financially sensible option to bolster their midfield.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Hansi Flick is a long-time admirer of Partey, who previously made a name for himself at Atlético Madrid before moving to Arsenal in the summer of 2020 for a fee of £45 million.
Despite Barcelona’s interest, it’s believed that Partey prefers to remain in London, largely due to his positive relationship with Arteta. However, he is reportedly seeking a new deal that does not involve a significant pay cut, aware that this may be his final major contract before the twilight of his playing career.
In addition to Barcelona, Partey has also attracted interest from several clubs in the Saudi Pro League, indicating a competitive market for his signature this summer.
