After the breakdown of the Nico Williams transfer, Barcelona’s leadership was caught off guard by a bold and unexpected proposal from midfield star Pedri.
Stepping up, Pedri approached the club’s top officials and put forward the name of a player he believes could be an excellent alternative.
His recommendation has since become a hot topic among Barcelona fans, with many excited by the idea and hopeful it could be a turning point for the club under new coach Hansi Flick.
The player Pedri suggested is none other than Xavi Simons — a talented midfielder who began his career at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
Simons has grown into one of Europe’s most promising young players and is currently making waves at RB Leipzig.
According to Pedri, Simons would be a perfect fit for Barça’s midfield due to his vision, technical ability, and maturity on the pitch, despite still being very young.
Pedri isn’t alone in backing Simons’ potential return. Several young players in the current squad, including Alejandro Balde — a close friend of Simons — and rising stars Lamine Yamal and Fermín López, are said to be in favor of the move.
They see Simons as someone who could add energy and creativity to the team.
However, the transfer isn’t straightforward. Financially, it poses a serious challenge.
Leipzig reportedly want around €70 million for Simons — a figure well beyond Barcelona’s current budget unless they sell a key player such as Ronald Araújo or goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
On top of that, there are tactical concerns. Flick is reportedly looking for a fast, natural winger to replace Williams, whereas Simons is more suited to a central attacking role.
Despite the obstacles, bringing Simons back to Barcelona could align with Flick’s vision of building a young, energetic, and technically gifted squad.
With talents like Balde, Yamal, Fermín, and Juan García already in place, Simons could be a valuable addition.
Pedri strongly believes that Simons’ return would strengthen the midfield and help re-establish Barcelona’s identity — one rooted in possession, flair, and youth development — as they prepare for a new era under Flick’s leadership.
