FINAL VERDICT: Manchester City Hit With 50-Point Deduction After FA Ruling
Manchester City has officially been slapped with a 50-point deduction following a final ruling handed down today, according to a statement released by the Football Association this morning. The Premier League and Manchester City have been waiting anxiously for the outcome of 115 charges alleging breaches of financial regulations spanning 2009 to 2018. The club has consistently denied all accusations.
The tribunal examining these claims concluded in December 2024 after a 12-week hearing, yet the independent commission has only now delivered its final judgment. Over a year has passed since the tribunal ended, with the commission still deliberating, though football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes the decision was nearing completion.
Maguire explained on The Overlap that roughly half a million pieces of evidence were presented by both sides, making the review process exceptionally complex. “Coordinating three senior members of the commission to finalize the judgment has been challenging,” he said. “This has caused significant delays, but we anticipate the verdict in the coming months. The volume of evidence and severity of the charges means thorough consideration was unavoidable.”
He added that any sudden announcement, particularly close to season’s end, could create chaos. Both the Premier League and Manchester City are expected to receive very short notice before the public release, allowing legal teams to review the details. The timing could even coincide with major events like the World Cup final.
Regarding potential penalties, Maguire noted that relegation isn’t possible under Premier League jurisdiction—only points deductions are feasible. Comparing previous cases, Everton and Nottingham Forest faced six- and four-point penalties for three-year offenses. Given City’s allegations span nine years, a 40-60 point deduction aligns with precedent.
The seriousness of the claims, including potential corporate fraud, could trigger even more dramatic consequences. If proven, the club’s board could be forced to resign. “Corporate fraud is a grave matter,” Maguire emphasized. “It raises questions about honesty and governance. Similar to Juventus in Serie A, leadership changes would be inevitable if these allegations are confirmed.”
In short, while Manchester City maintains confidence in its defense, the scale and implications of the ruling could result in sweeping changes to the club’s structure. The 50-point deduction marks one of the most severe penalties in Premier League history, underlining the gravity of the financial regulation breaches alleged against the club over nearly a decade.
