Chelsea captain Reece James gave a candid assessment after his side fell to a 2–1 Premier League defeat against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The result allowed the Gunners to restore their five-point advantage over Manchester City at the top of the table following a tightly contested London derby.
Arsenal opened the scoring through William Saliba, who rose highest to convert from a corner. Chelsea managed to draw level just before halftime when a defensive mix-up led to an own goal. However, the home side regained control in the second half with another dead-ball situation, as Jurrien Timber finished from a delivery by Declan Rice, sealing an important victory.
Speaking after the match in an interview with Sky Sports, later reported by BBC Sport, James emphasized how decisive set-pieces have become in modern football. He remarked that a huge proportion of goals in 2026 are now coming from such situations and acknowledged that Arsenal rank among the best teams globally when it comes to capitalizing on them.
According to him, their efficiency and organization make them extremely difficult to defend against. Despite his disappointment with the loss, he noted that Chelsea still created chances and could have scored more on another day.
The Gunners entered the match on the back of a commanding 4–1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur, but they were not at their fluent best this time. They controlled just 42 percent of possession, and Chelsea appeared the stronger side in the final half hour—even after Pedro Neto was sent off.
Arsenal were ultimately rescued by an outstanding display from goalkeeper David Raya, who produced several crucial saves, including a dramatic late stop that preserved the win. The result keeps them five points ahead of City, although Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand against Crystal Palace.
Attention now shifts to Arsenal’s upcoming league trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, while City are set to host Nottingham Forest the same evening. Having already beaten Brighton twice this season, including in the Carabao Cup, Arsenal will be confident of repeating that success.
