Arsenal starlet Max Dowman etched his name into Premier League history by becoming the youngest goalscorer ever in the competition during the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday. At just 16 years and 73 days old, the substitute sprinted from his own half to score into an empty net in injury time, after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had moved forward for a set-piece.
Dowman had earlier contributed to Viktor Gyokeres’ opener in the 89th minute, highlighting his influence in a match that keeps Arsenal nine points clear at the top of the Premier League following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.
Speaking on Match of the Day, former England goalkeeper Joe Hart praised Dowman’s inclusion: “Mikel Arteta isn’t taking any chances. He’s bringing him on because he believes he can make a difference. Age doesn’t matter—he’s being trusted to help the team win.”
Despite his obvious talent, Arsenal are cautious in nurturing the young England Under-19 international. Having made his seventh first-team appearance, Dowman first joined Arsenal’s senior environment on a training trip to Dubai at just 14, participating in pre-season friendlies before making his competitive debut against Slavia Prague last November.
Arteta has carefully managed his exposure, giving him two domestic cup starts and five substitute appearances across competitions.
Strict rules govern under-18 players in adult football. Dowman, still at school and preparing for GCSE exams, changes in a separate room and is always accompanied by a chaperone on away trips. Broadcaster Lucy Ward, formerly a welfare officer at Leeds United, explained that while he appears and behaves like an adult, legally he is still considered a child and safeguarded accordingly.
Arsenal also monitor his reactions to different situations, from being on the bench to training with the first team. A dedicated security team member is assigned to stay close to him at all times.
Experts emphasize that early success does not guarantee a smooth path; players like Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri faced fluctuations in game time despite early promise. Ward stressed the importance of parents helping young players cope with setbacks.
Looking ahead, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha sees Dowman as an exceptional case but believes English football will produce more precocious talents.
Dowman’s performance under pressure, coming on at 0-0 late in a title-chasing fixture, illustrates both his maturity and Arsenal’s confidence in him. While historical examples show varied career trajectories for young scorers, Dowman’s combination of talent, composure, and careful management gives hope that he could be a defining figure for Arsenal in the years to come.
